present an opposing view. In this situation (despite newspapers being
exempt from the idea of the Fairness Doctrine), I don't think the New
York Times should be required to provide equal time to McCain.
Being an editorial page, they should have the right to publish
whatever they want....HOWEVER....if a piece is presented and it meets
generally accepted editorial standards (i.e. claiming a piece needs to
mirror a completely separate political editorial is not an editorial
standard), then they should be obliged to publish that editorial.
The Fairness doctrine, if it were applied to newspapers, would force
the NYT to actively seek McCain's response. That part, I don't agree
with. What irks me here is that a perfectly acceptable editorial was
offered and it has been rejected based simply on ideologies.
